I do this because there are no public databases that I can use for my research. There are existing databases such as nobbi.com, radioraiders, NokiaPort (a Nokia only TAC database), imei-number.com but they all just allow to query the database. I want to have the database itself.
The TAC is the first 8 digits of the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). The IMEI can be queried by:
Entering *#06# on a mobile phone (sometimes one has to press the call button) (if you view this from a mobile phone click here)
Via AT command: AT+CGSN (AT+CGMI returns the manufacturer, AT+CGMM returns the model name)
Looking at the label behind the battery or the label on the box
